Butterfly Peg People

Okay…here's my confession…I enjoy my craft time as much with my kiddies as without…
today while they were gone I pulled out the peg dolls and decided to play!
Inspired by Spring and the promise of butterflies,
(and a prayer that there are more in our yard this year than last),
here's a little something I whipped up…

To make your own you will need:
wooden peg blanks
paint & paintbrushes
(whatever colours you wish)
wool felt in matching colours to your paint
glue gun and glue sticks
white wire
small beads
healthy dose of imagination and wonder

Line up your pegs…talk to them…see the butterfly emerging from within!
(I buy all my pegs from STOCKADE…they're a Canadian company and have great prices)

To begin paint your peg bodies and hair…this is how I did mine…

Next paint on your eyes, (toothpicks are great for making little dots)…
then a bit of beeswax crayon for the cheeks…
you can decorate with paint however you wish here…
I strongly encourage imagination!

Cut out your wings…I recommend using wool felt…
(cheap felt is fine too, but wool felt lasts longer, is more durable and SO lovely to work with)
If you don't feel up to the task of making up your own template, google "butterfly wing templates"
there are loads already all done for you!

Using a glue gun, glue on your wings...

Then I made them some headbands and glued on some antennae…
the antennae is composed of white wire with beads glued to the end…
the headbands are skinny rectangles of wool felt…glue the antenna to the back
of your headband, then glue the headband onto the head.

The inspiration for the little headbands came from the marvellous
Mrs Bloom at We Bloom Here.
She has a book all about making peg dolls

which can be purchased HERE
(her creations and imagination just inspire me to no end)

Toilet Paper Roll Butterflies.

I collect toilet paper rolls like a mad woman…
time to pull out a Springtime craft that will utilize my stash.

Enter the toilet paper roll butterfly!!!!

To make your own you will need:
toilet paper rolls
scissors
paint and brushes, (any colours you so wish)
twigs, (one thick one and two thin bits for antennae)
glue gun and glue sticks
creative enthusiastic helpers

To begin cut your toilet paper roll into 4 pieces.

Bend these at both ends so they form a "wing" shape...

like so!

To begin we painted our twig bodies and antennae black…this is optional…you can leave them plain.

Then paint some fancy designs on your "wings".  We did rainbows, polka dots…
we painted the inside of the "wings" as well.
Now let it dry…

Then glue it all together…glue the antennae onto the twig body
and then the wings onto the sides.

It should look something like this!

This was a great rainy day craft that channeled our creativity and LOVE of butterflies and Spring!
Not to mention it was easy to do, even for the littlest amongst us.

Bring on the butterflies!

Butterfly Finger Puppets

With spring seemingly unwilling to show it's face and snow still surrounding us, we decided to take matters into our own hands and bring spring to us.
What speaks spring more than butterflies and flowers?!
Here is our spring inspired solution...
Flower-filled butterflies to conjure up spring's warmth and new life.

To create you will need:

flowers (pressed flowers work best for the longest lasting collage)
sheet of colored construction paper
tape
mactac (also know as contact paper)

To begin:

Print or trace this butterfly template onto your colored paper.
Cut out your butterfly and then cut out the insides of the wings.

Gather up you flowers.
Cut out two squares of mactac a little larger than your butterfly.

Peel the backing off one of the squares of mactac and place the butterfly on top of the sticky side.
Now for the *FUN* part.

Fill the wings with flowers to make the butterflies come alive with color and beauty!

When your flower collage is complete, peel the backing off your other square of mactac and press it firmly on top of your butterfly to seal your flowers in.
Cut off the excess edges around your butterfly.

There you have it. A flower-filled butterfly!

When it was done we couldn't resist placing in in a sunny window for a bit to admire.
Instant spring to make us smile.

Soon it was time to let this butterfly fly.
To turn it into a finger puppet, simply cut a small strip of paper and tape it onto the back to fit the finger of the "flyer".

Ready to take flight!

Butterfly
Flutter by,
Butterfly,

Floating flower
in the sky.

Kiss me with your
Petal wings—

Whisper secrets,
Tell of spring.
