Rainbow Wax Suncatchers

These rainbow wax suncatchers were simple to create and a wonderful way to bring a splash of color to our windows while we wait for spring!

To create you will need

Crayons in the colors of the rainbow
pencil sharpener
wax paper
iron
regular paper

To begin:
Create shavings from your crayons, separating into little piles of each color of the rainbow as you go.
Sprinkle your shavings into rainbow layers on your wax paper.

Until it looks something like this!

Place wax paper over top of your rainbow.

Place it between two sheets of regular paper and iron it on low.

Cut out your rainbow.

Place in a window like this to catch the sun or...

Cut out shapes from your rainbow.
We were feeling the love so we decided on hearts!

They now brighten up our dining room offering us some colorful love to brighten our days.

Mandala Sun Catchers

I developed a love for mactac and pressed flowers when I was a girl. I have fond memories of being given a box of pressed flowers, some plain paper and mactac to create cards with. I think I still may even have a couple of those cards hidden away as keepsakes from my childhood.
I thought it might be fun to do something similar with my girls. This past summer we collected and pressed flowers from our garden and in the wild. We thought it would be so nice to have these flower faces smiling at us in the window! It was such a treat to pull them out now and admire them in the midst of (this never ending!) winter. We really enjoyed playing with these flowers and creating pressed flower mandala sun catchers!
They are simple to create.
Here is a quick how to...

To make you will need
mactac (also known as clear contact paper)
embroidery hoop
pressed flowers
suction cup for hanging

To begin...

Cut out two squares of mactac a little bigger than your frame.

Decide on your layout for your sun catcher.

Peel the backing off one of your mactac squares and secure (sticky side up) in your embroidery hoop.

Gently place your pattern of flowers onto the mactac .

When your design is complete, carefully remove it from the frame.

Peel the backing off your other square of mactac and press it on top of your design.

Place it back into the hoop.

Cut off the edges around the hoop.

Hang in your window to enjoy!!

Wishing you all...

abundant beauty in this day...

 and always!

Only 17 days until spring! The count down is on. Hopefully these flowers will tide us over until the fresh ones pop up their sweet faces!

In sunshine and flowers,

Shanti

Ice Rainbow Sun Catchers

Here in our neck of the woods of Canada, we are in the midst of a real deep freeze. We decided to take advantage of the frosty temperatures and create an ice craft!
To create you will need:

6 Round foil cake tins
Bits of nature in all the colors of the rainbow ~ outside, your kitchen and anything you may have pressed over the summer/fall are great for inspiration!
Food Coloring
String

To begin:
Place the natural objects that you found into the tins ~

one for each color of the rainbow.

Add food coloring into a jar of water and pour it into its corresponding pan.

Some items will stay where you want, but no need to spend too much time arranging... once the water hits the the pan all the bits seem to have a mind of their own!

Carefully bring your tins outside to a flat surface and allow to fully freeze.

Once they are frozen, tuck string inside the tin around the circumference of the ice (the ice seems to slip out fairly easily to allow you to do this).
Then pour some cold water into the tin and wait for it to all freeze again ~ this will secure your string for hanging.

Once it is re-frozen it is ready to be hung...

and admired...

while it twirls in the sun, bringing color to the white blanket of winter.

As they all melt ~ eventually! ~ they will leave some lovely little treats for the birds behind.

Hope you are finding yourself amidst bits of beauty where ever you are in the world!

Shanti
