It's Mod Podge Friday...Let's Decoupage an Old Dresser!!!!!

This dresser came from my Grandmothers house.  It was in deplorable shape when I got it, (I wish I had taken a before picture)...there were at least 10 coats of paint on it, (likely lead), and the top was in such bad shape, to get it refinished, I would have had to get a new top put on.  So, what's a frugal girl to do???
Bring on the Mod Podge!!!  Yes, with a bit of colourful paper, some paint and some Mod Podge, I thought I could bring this dresser back to life.  Maureen style!!!  First things first...I went for a trip to Ottawa...to a little piece of paper paradise called "the Papery", on Bank Street...I'm sure other cities have similar stores!  I chose some pretty random selections of gift wrap and scrapbooking papers!

Now...I will admit that on certain projects I can be a procrasti-crafter...I did this dresser some 3 years ago, and hadn't finished this one side...so, I thought in honour of our Mod Podge week, I would finish it and put up a little tutorial on how you can decoupage some dressers of your own.  Of course don't limit this to dressers...you could also do filing cabinets, cupboards, doors...be boundless in your imaginings!!!

So...as you can see I used some "hot pink" paint to balance out the colourful paper I would be sticking on!!!

Liberally apply your Mod Podge...don't be shy now...we want your paper to stick.

Cut your paper into squares, rectangles, and make a patchwork of colourful paper!!  When you stick it onto your piece of furniture, or whathaveyou...liberally apply more Mod Podge on top!!

Of course...Ruby wanted to help...this is a fun craft for all ages!!!  Imagine your children decoupaging their own dressers!!!!

And now...3 years later, my dresser is FINALLY finished!!!!!  Thank goodness for our Mod Podge Week!
I also remembered how easy it is to do this...and there's a beige filing cabinet that's just "aching" to be decoupaged upstairs!!!

There is a fabulous site called Mod Podge Rocks!, if you want to learn more about Mod Podge possibilities go check it out!

Thanks for coming by this week!

  2. At last, I know what I am a procrasti-crafter. I think for too long on some projects and others are done in a flash. Kind of comforting to know I am not alone. Fantastic dresser. I hope you have the perfect spot for it, to show it off to its best.

  4. Well mission accomplished, you did an AMAZING job. You have literally made me want to run out to the thrift stores to try and find a dresser to do this too :). Wonderful

  5. Yet another one of your AMAZING crafts. This is great. Do you have any idea if you could use fabric squares on something like this instead of paper. I just bought tons of different vintage quilt squares from a yard sale that I would love to use for something my daughter could be a part of instead of just making a big quilt. It is thin printed cotton fabric.

  6. Sorry, I forgot to ask if Mod Podge can be used on any surface??? Metal too?

  7. I don't see why you couldn't use fabric...however, I would perhaps "test" a piece to see what happens...if it were a dark piece of metal, it may show through the fabric. If I were you, I would check out the modpodgerocks website...I put a link to it in the post...that would be a much better place to see the possibilities.
I don't want to lead you down the wrong path, as I'm not really a Mod Podge expert!!

  10. So colourful and happy! I love happy furniture :-)

Ourjewel, I have seen it done with fabric before. I believe there is some light sanding to be done between coats. It looks fabulous, as does this one!
