Toadstool Fairy House

We always seem to have our toadstool radar on {dreaming up toadstool crafts}.
Inspired by my co-bloggers toadstools for the garden, I wondered if I could use a smaller wooden bowl and create a wee toadstool cottage!
With some fairy guidance it all came together.
Seeing perhaps an entire fairy village of these for them to frolick and dwell in!

To create you will need:

small wooden bowl
large toilet paper roll (or if you can't find an large one like this, a container would work)
red & white paint
bits of nature to embellish (we used moss, baby's breath, birch bark and pussy willows)
paint brush
glue

To begin:

Paint your bowl with a couple coats of red paint let it dry fully.
With a small paint brush add your toadstool spots.

Take your toilet paper roll and paint it white.

Then, cut your door shape out of birch bark.

Add on a little acorn cap for the handle and pussy willows if you are inspired.

Glue your door on and add your moss.

We tucked some baby's breath into the moss ~ couldn't resist adding the perfect fairy flower!

Fairy goodness complete!

Fairies
Did you ever hear
Of the frolic fairies dear?

They're a blessed little race,
Peeping up in fancy's face,

In the valley, on the hill,
By the fountain and the rill;

Laughing out between the leaves
That the loving summer weaves.
Frances Sargent Osgood

Our little fairy cottage now lies nestled in the "mountainous region" of our back yard to await the fairies.

Fairy Blessings to All,

Rainbow Fairies

We LOVE colour here at my house…
to help us celebrate SPRING and colour and our LOVE of fairy folk
we decided to create some simple Rainbow Fairies!!

To make your own you will need:
paint in rainbow colours
paintbrushes
pinecones
wooden bead "heads"
wood rounds
"wings"…we used silk leaves for ours
(felt would also work for wings)
glue gun and glue sticks!

To begin enlist the help of a pint sized friend, (willing 5 year olds are great),
paint each pinecone a colour of the rainbow!

This is how ours looked after they dried…we glued them to our bases,
(which were some cut up small pieces of wood we had)

Paint "hair" on your wooden beads

Using a very small brush, paint on faces…when they are dry using a red pencil crayon
or a beeswax crayon, draw on small cheeks.

We used food colouring to dye our wings all the colours of the rainbow…
soak them for about 10 min, then drain them and dry on paper towel…easy peasy!

Grab your glue gun and glue on the bead "heads" and wings…they should look like this!

This simple craft inspired LOTS of rainbow play at our house…
it was an inexpensive and JOY filled craft to do with my own little rainbow loving gal.

Wishing you all the colours of the rainbow!

Spring Fairies

We are getting sick of the stark white world that surrounds us here.
We NEED some rainbows and colour and hope!!
Enter the Spring fairy…fit for a St Patty's Day party or a Spring Fling.

To make your own you will need:
paint in rainbow colours
paintbrushes
peg figures
peg heads
bases for your pegs
wool felt
toothpick
scissors
beads, baubles
pipecleaners
glue gun and glue sticks
artificial leaves

To start gather your supplies…if you can't find pegs in your area you can order them online.
We get ours from stockade
Paint orange hair on your "heads"…paint rainbow stripes on the legs of your pegs.

Now paint 2 eyes and a mouth on your heads…
paint your bases whatever colour you wish.

Take a pipe cleaner and cut it in half…cut it in half again.  These will be your arms.
Wrap them around the "neck" of your peg.
Cut your felt into a rectangle…you will have to play with this part, but the basic shape is shown
in the photo above.  I did a scallop edge for the bottom.  Cut to fit.

Using your glue gun, glue the dress onto your peg.  Glue your "heads" on top.
Now…take 2 wooden toothpicks…cut off the sharp ends.  Paint these in rainbow colours.
(I stuck them into a small candle to dry…it was all I had on hand ;)

Take a beeswax crayon or red pencil crayon and colour some "cheeks" onto your face.
We also did little pipe cleaner headbands.
Now cut your wands to size, and glue a little bauble on top…I had some little stars that I used,
a bead would work too.

Glue on some "wings"…I used the leaf part of artificial flowers for this.
And we also decided to glue on a yarn necklace to cover the arms a bit.
All of these things are optional…imagination is strongly encouraged!
The Spring fairies are currently guarding over the Playmobil universe…
feels brighter in here already!

Birch Bark Fairy House

A little love for the fairies...

home sweet home.

Here is a simple way to create a fairy house for your fairy garden, nature table or for play in the home.

To make one you will need
birch bark
pine cone
acorn cap
small jar
ever lasting flowers (optional)
glue (I used a glue gun but I think that wood glue and gentle hands would work well too)

To begin

Cut a strip of birch bark and soak it in water to soften.
Wrap it around your jar and secure with elastics.
Leave it overnight or until dry.

Remove it from the jar and glue together to make
 the base of your home.

Cut out a circle of birch bark and then cut out a pie piece shape. The bigger the piece, the more pointed your roof will be.

Glue the opening back together and you have a roof!

Cut out a door and glue your roof on.

To shingle your roof, cut a pine cone apart until you have a small pile of pine cone scales.

Glue your pine cone scales onto the roof in layers of circles.

Top it off with a acorn cap....

and embellish with flowers if you are inspired.

There you have it! A home for the fairies.

Now we await their arrival and hope that they enjoy their new abode.

Do you have any favorite fairy house creations? We always love new fairy inspiration!

For the love of fairies,
Shanti

Borax Bejeweled Bits Of Nature

On my walks I am often drawn to gathering bits of beauty that cross my path and carrying home an arm load (and pockets full!) of natures gifts. My girls have joined in on this pleasure and together we keep our vases, nature table, baskets, jars... (you get the idea ;) full.
The collecting doesn't seem to end in winter. There is still so much beauty peeking out of the snow ~ milkweed, Queen Anne's Lace, berries, branches... a bounty of natures gifts!
Inspired by the borax snowflakes, I thought we might combine our love of nature with our love crystals and see what happens!
We were truly delighted by the outcome.
Mother nature being the true artist!

Here's how simple it is.

To create you will need
seed pods, branches, dried grass, berries, pine cones... any bits of nature that call to you
borax
jars
water

*Borax is a laundry booster and is labeled *all natural* but please use caution when working with children. Have the adult or teacher handle the borax and work in a ventilated room just to be safe*

To begin gather your bits of nature.

Put your water on to boil.
Then place your borax into your jar (3 Tbsp for each cup of water).
Add your boiled (measured) water and stir until dissolved.

Submerse your bits of nature into the jar and let sit.
The longer you leave them the larger the crystals will grow.
We just kept peeking at ours (every couple hours) until we had the size of crystals we desired.
When they are ready, gently remove them from the water and lay to dry.
Be sure to handle the pieces with care, as the crystals are quite fragile.

We were enchanted with their shimmering crystals.

Each one beautiful in their own way.

I think one of our favorites was this coneflower seed head. The girls were convinced it was now a wand for a very lucky fairy.

Perhaps an acorn hat for the fairy too!

The berries looked as though they had been frost kissed

and the grass sparkled and glittered in the sun.

The crystals hung so delicately on Queen Anne's Lace skeleton.

The milkweed pods were lovely all bejeweled.

With each piece we marveled.

We placed a bouquet of these jewel glazed beauties our table. Just the right bit of glittering magic to brighten these cold winter days.

We also lay some on our nature table with King and Queen (and baby) winter to keep them company.
I think we are hooked!

A very HAPPY VALENTINES to one and all. May your day over flow with all things LOVE!

Shanti
